Acrylic Perspex Splashbacks: Art Behind Your Hob

Instantly transform your kitchen with a stunning, high-definition Acrylic Perspex Splashback. This product combines durable, easy-to-clean material with vibrant custom art, turning the space behind your stove into a modern focal point.

PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING YOUR ORDER:

1. Heat Clearance & Proximity Specifications:
Our splashbacks are manufactured using premium, high-grade acrylic polymers, which offer a stunning, high-gloss alternative to glass. Because polymer acrylic is a thermoplastic material, it reacts naturally to extreme heat.

  • Minimum Clearance: A mandatory minimum clearance distance of 110mm to 150mm must be maintained between the outer edge of your nearest rear cooking ring/burner plate and the surface of the splashback.

  • Thermal Management: If burners are positioned closer than this specified distance, the excessive heat can cause the material to overheat, resulting in bubbling, rippling, or bowing. If your countertop depth does not accommodate this clearance, a protective thermal barrier—such as a piece of toughened safety glass—must be installed directly over the splashback behind the cooking area.

2. Approved Adhesives & Application Methods

The backing of your custom printed splashback is chemically sensitive and requires specific bonding agents to preserve its pristine look and integrity.

  • Approved Methods: Use only non-reactive, neutral-cure (low modulus) silicone or premium, solvent-free grab adhesives.

  • Prohibited Methods: Never use acid-cure silicones (distinguished by a strong, vinegar-like scent) or standard high-solvent construction glues. These aggressive chemicals will react with the back of the panel, causing severe discoloration, degradation, or damage to the print. The use of double-sided tape for full mounting must also be avoided.

3. Allowing for Natural Thermal Expansion

Unlike glass, polymer acrylic expands and contracts slightly with household ambient temperature fluctuations.

  • Expansion Gaps: When measuring and fitting your panel, a 2mm to 3mm expansion gap must be left around the entire perimeter (where the panel meets countertops, side walls, or adjacent cabinetry).

  • Sealing: Fitting panels completely flush without a gap can cause the material to buckle or warp when warm. Once positioned, these perimeter gaps should be neatly sealed with a bead of neutral silicone to ensure a watertight finish.

4. Wall Preparation

Because high-gloss acrylic panels can occasionally mirror underlying surface textures, the mounting wall must be completely flat, structurally sound, clean, dry, and entirely free of old grease, dust, or loose plaster prior to applying adhesive.

Acrylic (Perspex) Splashback Installation Guide

⚠️ Important Safety & Material Information

Guidance Feature Specification & Safety Warning
Gas Hobs DO NOT install this acrylic splashback directly behind a gas hob where an open flame is present. The high, direct heat from gas burners will damage the material. For installations near gas hobs, a minimum clearance distance of 110mm -150mm from the nearest burner edge to the splashback surface is strictly required.
Heat Tolerance While high-grade acrylic can withstand standard kitchen ambient temperatures, it will melt, warp, or bubble if positioned too close to intense cooking heat sources. If your back wall becomes extremely hot during normal cooking, an acrylic splashback is not recommended.
Adhesive Warning DO NOT USE adhesives containing acids (such as acid-cure silicones) or heavy-duty double-sided tape. These compounds cause a severe chemical reaction that permanently damages the backing. Use only Neutral-Cure / Low-Modulus Silicone or Solvent-Free Grab Adhesives.
Safety First Always wear safety goggles and protective gloves during surface preparation, drilling, and handling.

📋 Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

Step 1: Surface Preparation & Initial Inspection

  1. Clean the Surface: Ensure the entire wall area where the splashback is to be mounted is completely clean, dry, flat, and entirely free of grease, old adhesive residues, or dust.

  2. Mark the Position: Hold the splashback panel against the wall in its final intended position. Use a spirit level to verify it is perfectly straight, then lightly trace the perimeter outline onto the wall using a pencil.

Step 2: Drilling Custom Holes (If Required)

Follow these instructions carefully to drill acrylic cleanly without cracking or chipping the material:

  1. Secure the Sheet: Lay the panel on a stable, flat surface. Place a piece of scrap wood directly underneath the target drilling zone to support the material and prevent exit-chipping.

  2. Mark the Spot: Apply a layer of masking tape directly over the drilling area and mark the precise hole location onto the tape. This prevents the drill bit from slipping.

  3. Drill Speed & Technique: Fit your drill with a sharp bit designed for plastics. Set your drill to a low speed to avoid friction-induced melting. Apply steady, gentle downward pressure.

  4. Cooling & Finishing: If the material begins to heat up, pause briefly to let it cool down. Once the hole is complete, gently smooth any rough edges on the back of the sheet using fine-grit sandpaper.

Step 3: Mounting the Splashback to the Wall

Select ONE of the following mounting methods based on your preference:

Option A: The Screw-Fixing Method (Recommended for easy removal)
  1. Align & Mark Wall: Hold your drilled panel up to your pencil outline on the wall. Mark the screw hole positions through the panel onto the wall surface. Remove the panel, drill the wall holes, and insert your wall plugs.

  2. Secure the Panel: Align the splashback over the wall plugs. Gently insert your Perspex Spacers or Mirror Screws.

  3. Tighten with Caution: Tighten the screws carefully. DO NOT overtighten, as excessive pressure will crack the acrylic around the holes. Fit the decorative screw caps/covers for a clean, professional finish.

Option B: The Adhesive-Fixing Method (For a seamless, flush look)
  1. Verify Adhesive: Double-check that your chosen adhesive is 100% Solvent-Free or explicitly labeled as a Neutral-Cure Silicone.

  2. Apply to Panel: Apply an even pattern of adhesive to the back of the splashback. We recommend running a continuous bead around the perimeter (leaving a short gap from the outer edge) and vertical beads spaced 5cm to 8cm apart across the remaining surface area.

  3. Position & Press: Carefully align the panel with your pencil markings on the wall. Press firmly across the entire surface to ensure even contact and bonding.

  4. Secure & Support: Use masking tape or temporary bottom supports to hold the panel securely against the wall while the adhesive cures. Refer to your adhesive product label for exact curing times (typically 24 to 48 hours). Immediately double-check the panel with your spirit level to ensure it has not shifted.

Step 4: Finishing and Sealing

  • Seal the Edges: Using your caulking gun, apply a neat, continuous bead of Neutral-Cure / Low-Modulus Silicone Sealant along all four outer edges where the splashback meets the surrounding walls and countertop.

  • Smooth the Joint: Use a silicone smoothing tool or a wet finger to smooth the bead into a clean, professional, watertight seal.

  • Immediate Clean Up: Wipe away any excess silicone or adhesive spills immediately with a clean cloth before the product begins to cure.

Step 5: Ongoing Care & Maintenance

  • Initial Curing Time: Allow all structural adhesives and perimeter silicone seals to cure completely before utilizing your stovetop burners.

  • Routine Cleaning: Wash the surface using only a clean, soft microfiber cloth, warm water, and a mild, non-abrasive detergent (such as standard liquid dish soap).

  • Strictly Avoid: DO NOT use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, harsh chemical sprays, window cleaners, or solvent-based solutions. These harsh agents will permanently dull, scratch, or haze the high-gloss surface of your splashback.
